In 2003, The Denver Hospice (formerly Hospice of Metro Denver) received an unprecedented $500,000 federal grant to establish an educational institute, the Life Quality Institute. In collaboration with the University of Colorado Health Science Center and other academic institutions and professional organizations, the Life Quality Institute would provide palliative and end-of-life care education to students, medical professionals, and communities throughout Colorado.
Since inception, the Institute has provided more than 80,000 hours of palliative and end-of-life care education throughout Colorado. Over 2,000 medical and other healthcare students have participated in an experiential program about palliative and end-of-life care through the Life Quality Institute. Professional health providers have received more than 15,000 hours of palliative care education.
Educational services are growing exponentially. During 2008, the Life Quality Institute will train over 700 medical students, nursing students, physician assistants, and residents by providing more than 15,000 hours of experiential learning. The Institute will provide in excess of 6,000 hours of training to other healthcare professionals including social workers, chaplains, counselors, and therapists. Additionally through the Creating Communities of Care and the Share the Wisdom programs, the Life Quality Institute provides over 8,000 hours of community education aimed towards establishing a supportive community framework for palliative care medicine.
While the numbers are impressive and pre- post-test scores demonstrate enhanced understanding of palliative care, the success of Life Quality Institute is expressed in the writings of students.
